Outreach For Kids

About

WHO ARE WE?

Outreach for Kids is a small, grassroots, all volunteer non-profit organization that provides much needed support to local foster children with special needs.

We work closely with the Service Coordinators of Managed Treatment Services (MTS), a division of the Department of Social Services, to attempt to fulfill some of the many needs the state is unable to meet for these children.

Through the MTS Service Coordinators’ close interactions and specific knowledge of each foster child, we are able to reach out and help enrich the lives of these children.

OUR GOAL: To do everything within our power and resources to assist MTS with getting these kids the help they need and deserve.

More About Us

WHAT IS MANAGED TREATMENT SERVICES?

Managed Treatment Services (MTS) is a special division of the South Carolina Department of Social Services (SCDSS). MTS serves foster children that are ISCEDC (Interagency System of Care for Emotionally Disturbed Children).

MTS case manages over 300 children in the Charleston office alone. This includes one service coordinator who works with medically fragile clients.

WHO ARE THESE CHILDREN?

In order to be eligible for ISCEDC (Interagency System of Care for Emotionally Disturbed Children), the child must have a severe emotional disturbance. A great number of the MTS children have significant trauma histories including physical, mental and sexual abuse. They also handle medically fragile children who need higher level of foster care. For example children on ventilators as a result of parental drug use, etc.

Most of these children are in the MTS system for many years. This is not usually a transitional situation for them.

HOW CAN I HELP?

FINANCIAL CONTRIBUTIONS: One of the on-going projects we are committed to fulfilling is the Birthday Recognition Project. This is a day that is truly special and unique for these children and so often forgotten. Their lists of items that they would love to receive are often diverse and surprisingly usually quite modest.

We have found that a cash contribution that can be used to purchase a $25-50 gift card (retail such as Walmart/Target/TJ Maxx, etc…) allows the child the joy of picking out their special birthday gift. The Service Coordinators are pleased to be able to take them to the store to shop for their gift (and will often suggest to us which store gift card would be most appropriate for the child).

-Our goal is to be able to increase the Birthday gift-cards to $100 but for now, it is $25-50 per child, depending on how much we are able to raise.

-As our budget allows, financial contributions also will be used to purchase various items needed for children on a case-by-case basis and work on other projects (i.e. orthodontia work, see above under what do these children need).

GIFTS-IN-KIND: On a case-by-case basis, we do need and accept and distribute computers, books, school supplies, art supplies, hobby supplies and furniture.
